Chain wax and lube interval

Wax and lube makers count kilometres; your week counts days. Pick what’s on your chain and how far you ride, and get the interval in days, with the wear limit that protects your cassette.

Check chain wearEvery 1 month · By datePark Tool says replace an 11- or 12-speed chain at 0.5 % wear, before it wears the cassette. Park Tool gives no check interval; a monthly check is our suggestion.

Wax chainEvery 2 weeks · By dateSilca says re-wax about every 300–400 km; at 150 km a week that’s every 2 weeks.
  • Do it sooner when the chain gets noisy: Silca and Squirt both name noise as the sign.

How it works

Each maker’s figure is kilometres per application: Silca 300–400 km for Secret Chain Blend and up to 800 km with EnduranceChip, Molten Speed Wax 560–640 km on dry roads, Squirt 800–1000 km on the road and 250–300 km on dry gravel, Silca Super Secret drip 350–400 km, CeramicSpeed UFO Drip about 300 km in dry, clean conditions. For oil-based wet and dry lubes, Muc-Off’s floor is to clean and lube at least every 150 km.

The interval is the lower figure divided by your weekly distance, so the reminder comes before the wax runs out, rounded to a step GearKit shows (days, then weeks, then months). If your weeks vary a lot, set the distance to a busy week.

Chain wear is a limit, not a date: Park Tool replaces an 11- or 12-speed chain at 0.5 % elongation, 10-speed or fewer at 0.75 %, single-speed at 1.0 %. How often to measure is our suggestion, at least monthly.
