Espresso machine cleaning schedule
Detergent backflushes follow the shots you pull; gaskets and burrs follow the years. Say how much you brew and on what, and get each job as a date.
Your schedule
Detergent backflush every 6 weeks
- 1Backflush with detergentEvery 6 weeks · By dateECM says clean the group with detergent every 90–140 cups: every 6 weeks at 2 shots a day. Not much more often: detergent dries out an E61 group’s moving parts.
- 1Backflush with waterEvery 1 day · By use · OptionalClive Coffee backflushes with plain water on any day the machine is used (weekly if that’s all you manage); log a use and it comes due the next day.
- 3Refresh boiler waterEvery 1 week · By date · OptionalECM refreshes the boiler water every one to two weeks depending on use, drawing it off through the hot-water wand.
- 4Replace grinder burrsEvery 17 years · By date · OptionalBaratza’s support manager puts steel burrs at about 500 lb (227 kg); at 13.1 kg a year that’s 17 years.
- 1Replace group gasketEvery 1 year · By dateClive Coffee replaces the group gasket and shower screen about once a year rather than waiting for a leak.
- Descaling depends on your water and your machine’s manual: ECM recommends water no harder than 4 °dH and leaves descaling to a dealer.
- Burr life depends on the beans, the roast and how fine you grind; replace sooner if grind times creep up or the grind gets uneven.
Keep it on a countdown
GearKit counts down to every job and reminds you before it’s due. Open this schedule in the app and it adds the item with every job above.
Countdowns start the day you add it. Did a job recently? Mark it done in GearKit and set Completed on to that day.
Add at least one job with a title to make a link.
Built on this page. The schedule travels in the part of the link after the #, and our server never sees it.
How it works
ECM, for its E61 machines: clean the group with detergent about every 90–140 cups, and not much more often, because detergent degreases the group’s moving parts; refresh the boiler water every 1–2 weeks. La Marzocco: backflush often rather than by count. Clive Coffee (a retailer): plain-water backflush on any day the machine is used, detergent every 1.5–2 months, gasket and shower screen about once a year. Breville: water filter every two months.
For E61 groups the detergent interval is ECM’s lower figure divided by your shots a day. Burrs: your daily coffee (shots × dose) against Mahlkönig’s ~500 kg for its home burrs or Baratza’s ~227 kg (steel) and ~340 kg (ceramic).
